The Size of the Brain Is Not the Main Issue

 By Alicia Centelles

Controversies aside, don´t you think it would be very interesting to know which brain is bigger:
Einstein's or Marie Curie's?

A Norse legend tells three fishermen found a mermaid, and each asked her to grant him a wish. The first one wanted to be twice as intelligent as the smartest man in the world, and the mermaid pleased
him. The second fisherman wished to be four times smarter than the smartest man in the world, and the mermaid granted him.

The third wanted to be ten times smarter than any man in the world, and when the mermaid asked him if he was sure, he said yes. Then the mermaid transformed him into a woman.

This curious tradition inevitably came to mind when we learned the news that originates this work: an American anthropologist states that the male brain is larger than the female one.

More than a Hundred Grams of Difference

American anthropologist Dean Faulk claimed to have analyzed the anatomical structure of hundreds of people, and that she compared the brains of men and women of equal height and weight.

The researcher, in a report published by Chilean newspaper La Tercera, explained that at studying subjects weighing 60 kilograms, the results were a brain of 1373 grams on average, while women reached 1256.

However, Dr. Faulk clarified the bigger size in men´s brain is not because they have superior congenital abilities, which differentiate us from primates.

Women Recover Quickly

The announcement by American researcher Dean Faulk about the larger size of the male brain, provoked an immediate local controversy in Chile.

In this regard, Francisco Aboitiz, researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering of the University of Chile, agreed that indeed, the size of the brain does not imply a substantial difference regarding the capacities of both sexes.

The specialist has especially studied the part of the brain known as corpus callosum, which joins the right hemisphere to the left one. Another Chilean scientist believes that, for this reason, women recover quickly when they suffer neurological trauma.

A very interesting article. I can´t understand how so many people still think women are inferior.
